The effect of  saline soils on plant growth depends on the plant species and age of the plant. Most landscape plants and seedling cannot tolerate saline soils. If the salinity is low, the growth of  the plants may be stunted. For higher salinity levels, the leaves may turn yellow, wilt and fall off.

Salinity affects plant growth in a number of  ways

1. When the concentration of  salt in the soil is high, it becomes difficult for the plant roots to absorb water from the soil through the process of  osmosis.

2. If the soil is extremely saline, water will move from the root cells to the surrounding soil with a higher concentration of salt and the plant may dry away

3. The salts may bind with soil clays, resulting in compaction and the soil will swell up. The change in soil structure will make it difficult for the roots of  the plant to absorb oxygen from the surrounding soil.
